_Lithospermum erythrorhizon_ root extract comes from an herb native to China, Japan, and Korea that is also called gromwell. The dried root of this plant has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat skin ailments, including burns and rashes. In cosmetics, research finds this root extract improves skin’s barrier by reducing trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) and soothing. It also effectively reduces oxidative stress, a key cause of visible signs of aging. In addition, one study found it was effective at shielding skin from UVB-induced photoaging, making it an intriguing ingredient to follow when it comes to skin care benefits.
