Thymol description

Thymol is a type of compound known as a monoterpenoid phenol. It’s found naturally in thyme oil. Since thymol is a plant derivative, it exerts antioxidant properties on skin, fighting oxidative stress that can lead to premature aging. It also has skin-soothing abilities thanks to its ability to inhibit inflammation, visibly reduce redness, and help soothe skin. Due to its fast mechanism of action against visible redness and irritation, it may have utility in cleansers meant for acne-prone skin. We should note that because of its volatile and fragrant nature, thymol has the potential to irritate skin; however, this is mainly of concern when it’s used in larger amounts. The safe, recommended use levels for thymol are 0.05% in leave-on products and 0.1% in rinse-off formulations.
